Discover the Spookiest Colorado Ghost Towns!
Enjoying fall is not hard in Colorado, with incredible weather, hiking, and adventure right in our backyard playground. It is magical and so much fun.
I wanted to share something a little different with you—an adventure off the beaten path. Colorado is known for its stunning landscapes, but did you know it’s also home to some of the most hauntingly beautiful ghost towns? If you’re a history buff, adventurer, or just love a good ghost story, these spots should be on your October travel list.
Here’s a list of the top 8 ghost towns in Colorado that offer a mix of history, scenic beauty, and eerie charm:
1. St. Elmo
Located in Chaffee County, this well-preserved ghost town has several intact buildings and is one of the best-known ghost towns in Colorado. It was once a bustling gold and silver mining town.
2. Animas Forks
Near Silverton, Animas Forks is a scenic ghost town situated at 11,200 feet. It has remnants of cabins, a general store, and other structures from its mining days.
3. Ashcroft
Nestled near Aspen, Ashcroft offers picturesque views of the surrounding mountains. Once home to thousands of miners, only a few log cabins and buildings remain.
4. Independence
Located near Aspen as well, Independence was a gold rush town. Visitors can explore the remains of log cabins that once housed miners in the 1880s.
5. Teller City
Located in northern Colorado, Teller City was once a silver mining town. It now consists of several well-preserved log cabins.
6. Gothic
Near Crested Butte, Gothic was a mining town that now serves as the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. Visitors can still see the old mining buildings and explore the area’s natural beauty.
7. Alta
Just outside Telluride, Alta offers a scenic view of the San Juan Mountains. This ghost town once thrived on mining but now only has a few buildings remaining.
8. Dearfield
Unlike most mining ghost towns, Dearfield was an African-American farming community founded in 1910. It's located east of Greeley, and though it's mostly abandoned, it has a significant cultural history.
Visiting these sites is like stepping back in time—especially when you go during the fall, as the crisp air and golden aspen leaves set the perfect atmosphere for ghostly exploration.
